Getting food to those who need it
The Avra valley is a rural valley west of the Tucson Mountains. The community is varied but one thing is certain, it is a food desert. There are no grocery stores on this side of the mountain and on average it’s a 20-40 minute drive to a store – sometimes farther.
We have Door Dash and Instacart available in some areas but the prices become exorbitant. We’ve got Dollar General – two of them. The Family Dollar closed a while back.
There’s a growing number of food trucks and pop up restaurants (like Nico’s Express) but food is hard to come by. Not to mention the ecological stress our area is under – small farming and other means of self sufficiency are getting harder to attain.
As a community, we have the opportunity to support the people who need it most – those with limited cash resources, those who do not have adequate transportation to get to town, and those with mobility or other movement issues – we can alleviate some of the burden of the rising costs of food.
Many folks drive in and out of our valley for work and other activities. There are food resources we can lean on to bring fresh food to our valley with the people already traveling.
